They resented the Chucrh, which they perceived as opposed to both Jews and homosexuals. In Romeo and Juliet the romantic couple go to a priest and marry. In West Side Stroy, the Church does not exist and there is no priest. Instead, Maria sings that she is getting married today, meaning that she plans to lose her virginity (ater all, Puerto Rican women are sluts who do not marry). Sad to say, half the world thinks they saw an accurate portrayal of Puerto Ricans after viewing the misleading play or the movie.
