It is scandalous that parents can take their children into see R rated films when in Britain most of these films were rated X prior to 1983, and after that given an over 18 rating.

You talked about them adopting her for the external validation about how inspiring and selfless they are and I absolutely believe that’s true BUT I would almost guarantee there’s another slightly different evil ass reason they adopted her. I grew up around quite a few adopted people— more specifically people who were adopted from outside of the United States. And one thing that I noticed ever since childhood, is that a large number of the people who adopt children, especially children from overseas or children, who have disabilities, are doing so not just because they want to be told how incredible they are as people but also because they use them as an accessory to show off their wealth. Adoption is expensive. Transnational adoption is even more expensive. Caring for a special needs child is expensive. They use them the same way they’d use a Hermes bag, to signal to people that they’re so wealthy. People understand that you have to be well off to afford to do it so it’s no different than people knowing you have to be well off to buy a Lamborghini. If you think about Michael and how badly he wants people to know about and see his wealth, it’s wholly unsurprising that they would’ve adopted her so she could be their living, breathing Lamborghini. To them she was just another one of those 14 couches. An inanimate object that could be used to signal their wealth to everyone else— and she just happened to have the added benefit of also being a great tool for getting them sympathy and accolades and positive attention. It was honestly the perfect decision for them, right up until they realized a special needs child is a lot more work than a fucking couch.
