Hey Illy, you’ll probably never see this, but I just wanted to say that this video really meant a lot to me. Your experience is really close to my own and you voiced so many things that I’ve been feeling internally for so long. My mom is Taiwanese and my dad is Jewish, so I always have some sort of identity crisis going on. I’ve always been more connected to my Taiwanese side even though I live in the US because my mom made sure I learned the language, as well as some of the culture and history, and I’ve also lived in Taiwan for some amounts of time. My dad is way more lax in terms of cultural stuff, and while we do celebrate Hanukkah and he made sure I knew that I was Jewish and that there was a certain historical significance that went with that, I never really felt it as a strong part of my identity, at least until more recently. It’s only now after I’m learning about ww2 in English and History at school that I’ve been really thinking about the Jewish part of my identity. It feels strange claiming that I’m Jewish because I feel so much more distanced from it (especially with it technically being passed on maternally), but it’s still a part of me regardless. To be honest I was really hesitant to make this comment (partly why it’s on my throwaway account) because I didn’t want this to come back to bite me in the future. Theres so much hate in the world, and the political climate is so crazy, that I don’t know if maybe 5 years down the line I might be put in danger just for who I am. But, hearing your story and seeing someone with a background so similar to mine go through what you did and then be able to learn about themselves, reconnect, and embrace their heritage really means a lot to me. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for showing me this, it really means everything to me.

16 year old here… I’ve been getting into bad things like drinking and smoking weed and cursing. I used to be a lot closer to God and would dress very modestly, but when I saw every other girl at school dating and getting attention from guys, I felt jealous and like something was wrong with me. I’m still struggling to forgive this boy who hurt me so much, he claimed to be Christian but all he wanted was one thing and when he realized he couldn’t get that from me, I was nothing to him, and I loved him and thought he was different. I struggle with being single and worry that there is no one out there for me.
