I had a friend that went viral in a video a year ago. She had been lost for years, homeless on drugs, prostituting. I decided to go out and find her w/my boyfriend. We went in some of the sketchiest parts of Florida (Paramore st, eek). I finally found her behind a gas station. She was a mess. I had no expectations of going out there other than to remind her how fucking loved she is and to give her a hug. No pressure to do anything or be anything or to change her circumstance. Just a message of love within a period of her life she had forgotten what it even was. I set her up in a room for a few days (which she destroyed, I knew she would) and she talked a big game about wanting help but never went. She just wasn't done yet. Cut scene to today. She is sober, just got her first apartment, has a job and was recently promoted in it, is expecting a little girl in january, and is really happy. I'm going to see her during Thanksgiving when I drive down. I tell this story to say remind those that need it that they are so loved, but don't push them to be what you want them to be. Telling them that they are failing your expectation of them is just another reason for them to use. The issue here is not their decisions, it's the hatred of their present moment. Just remind them they are loved in that present moment. That's its. Simple as.
