Meth ruled my life for years . It was my master and I it’s slave . Prior to that I was a pain pill addict for over a decade . I had a 3 decade active addiction, except during my pregnancies I never touched a drug . I still don’t know how I got out alive and have almost 5 years of living without putting chemicals into my body . Pain was my motivator , and getting honest was my motto . I had to realize my entire way of life was fucked up . I had to realize my thoughts and reasoning were always colored with manipulation and self servance. I had to completely surrender my life and my ways . That started with just getting sober and telling myself “ no” a thousand times a day . For the first 6 months my mind raced and I barely slept but was always exhausted. Mind you , I moved 800 miles away to completely start over . My existence was in my apartment on an air mattress with a spoon a fork and about 20 other single items in my apartment. I had to fake it til I made it at work , and that was a task that took determination and grit . Days turned into weeks into months into years . I built a relationship again with my kids with phone calls n video chats about a year into my sobriety . When my daughter flew down to see me with my grandson , I felt like I had hit the lottery . Life started to become normal at about the 2 year mark . I cleaned up my credit , I have in savings a down payment for a house and I’m getting ready to move back home in less than three weeks . I am lucky to be alive and sober . I am blessed beyond measure . I can truly say I see why people continue in their drug use , it’s predictable , you avoid dealing with the inner child that is full of pain that robbed you of a normal life . The road to sobriety is painful , lonely , scary , raging , and you have to accept who you are and find a way to forgive yourself and everyone in your life that stole your identity and innocence. My kids walking out of my life was when the pain of staying high hurt more than the pain of getting sober . They gave me the gift I needed to find myself . No matter how bad your life might be right now , please find that spark of hope in you . You are worth it .

I remember once when I was pretty young it was a slightly warmer day and I asked a service woman who happened to be in the store at the same time as me and my mom if her uniform was really hot to wear. I always saw service members wearing them and was super curious. She was really nice and explained that its not too bad, and even let me try on her jacket. I remember I gave her the biggest, happiest smile ever and thanked her a lot. It looked like i genuinely made her day, and she went above and beyond in terms of answering a curious kids questions. She didn't have to let me try on the jacket, but she did. It stands as one of my favorite memories, and I still look back on it very fondly. It's one of my few memories that will always put a smile on my face. I don't remember her name or rank, but I'll always remember her face and how happy she looked at my pure joy and excitement.
