Sorry that you had a bad experience with Carina Bay (they were still in a soft-opening mode back then & with Covid & their distance from affordable housing, they struggle to get staff...they had a job fair and FOUR people came out to apply), but that doesn't warrant bashing the entire island. A little bit of research (there are multiple Facebook groups, etc) would have pointed you toward more suitable lodging (we don't really do true all-inclusive here, but you probably would have been fine at The Fred or The Buccaneer) as well as TONS of awesome restaurants...you could have gotten good food by simply going to downtown Christiansted. Some of the best restaurants in the VI are right here on St. Croix. A little research also would have told you that you picked a spot way out away from almost everything & should have gotten a rental car. You can NOT experience St. Croix from a resort, this is not a traditional touristy island like St. Thomas, you will not be waited on hand & foot, you need to get out & explore. You also would have been able to get to better beaches North & West without the sargassum (legally not allowed to 'clean the beach', we have nature like leatherback turtles to protect). Food IS more expensive here than on the mainland...we're on an island & anything that isn't local has to be shipped in & the electric utility rates here are astronomical (and the grid is less than reliable), so that cost gets passed on to the consumer. Hopefully you'll do a little research before you travel anywhere else & maybe return here & do things a bit differently...you should've gone home well rested, liquored up, and with a full belly for $7k. I stayed in an AirBnB just a bit past Carina Bay in Grapetree Bay, rented a car, explored the island, had a great time & ended up moving here. It's not for everyone, do your research first.
