Thank you for this video. My story goes thus - I am not a worker but the wife of a CEO of a Company in Dubai. So we moved to Dubai in 2021from the UK due to my husband's business. Prior to the move, I had gone to Dubai with my husband on holiday three times. I am very sensitive to people's emotions or lack of it and so, behind the good afternoon ma'am, how may I help you ma'am etc, there was always an uncomfortable, uneasy feeling I could not shake off about Dubai. I quickly realized that a lot of the staff were often overworked and treated rather badly. So I began to do my research to see where the white vans and buses always took the workers after work and it was disappointing to see how the OTHER HALF live in Dubai! So fast forward to 2021 when we finally moved to Dubai. We stayed the first three months at the Westin Mina Sayayi Beach Hotel and most of the staff were amazing! However, it was clear that some of them did not like the fact that I am a black woman who they had to answer to. I was always very deliberately polite and pleasant but that did not stop some people in Dubai from being rude to me instinctively. The same goes for a lot of the men (whites, Indians Emiratees) who often jump to the wrong conclusion that I am a prostitute and would show and treat me with disrespect, contempt (they still do) whilst trying to petition me for sex. Ironically, as a committed Christian woman, I always dress modestly. Then we moved to a gated community where again as a minority black woman, I am sometimes treated with suspicions and rudeness, the latest incidence happened four days ago. The man was caught on camera in the gated community treating me badly and he is now answering for his rudeness! He was rude to me because he thought for me to be in a gated community, I must be a nanny or a maid so he treated me badly. What I find most disappointing is that often when these people realized I am not employed as a nanny or a maid and that they are in trouble for their rudeness, they would immediately apologise saying Sorry ma'am I did not know who you were. I find this upsetting because it should not matter whether or not I am a maid, a nanny or a menial worker. As a human being, I should be treated with respect period! Earning respect should not be subject to what you think my material status in life is! So, behind the tall buildings and the biggest mall, gated golf communities etc, I find Dubai to be full of all the vices often associated with a pretentious society.
