I spent almost 3 months sleeping outside and living off the land on my trapline in North Ontario last winter. Went from multiple layers of wool and parka to t-shirt, no hats or mitts in -20 to -25C within a week or so(barring any sort of nasty wind). The body is an amazing thing.

When I graduated from College as a PA, there was another student who went to College with us who went missing. She used to go running at night. I mean 12 midnight. 2 of us bought a house together and had a workout room. We begged her to some over at anytime to run, lift weights or whatever she wanted to do so she could do safe. We were in the medical field and knew first hand not to put ourselves in dangerous situations unnecessarily. I still get a lump in my throat when I talk about her. We all had dinner together the night before and we talked about this same thing. She stated that she loved hearing the birds and animals and the outdoor smells when she ran. The next 3 days we all had quite a few shifts to do in a row. The 3rd day we hadn’t heard from her, we all went down to file a missing report on her. She had no family. When she didn’t call or come to work there is a BIG problem. She is like me, we never miss work. Do you know that 3 days after we filed the report, someone running on the same trail noticed her feet sticking out of some bushes. Her ID was on her and emergency contacts. The police notified us to tell us that they found her and that she was deceased. I dropped the phone and slowly slid to the floor. I remember this like it was yesterday. They never did find out who did it. She wasn’t the only one killed on that trail. We didn’t know that at the time. There were 3 others. It was a 6 mile trail. I am hoping that with the new technology they will find out what animal did this. There was male dna on her but the person has never been arrested as of yet. After her death, there were no more victims. I believe that the person went somewhere else and continued doing the same thing to others. Some times I get a heavy feeling in my stomach and chest.
