The Fat man radio program was one of my favorite radio programs growing up in the 1940's along with Intersanctum, The Mysterious Traveller, Suspense, Sherlock Holmes, The Shadow, Nick Carter, Gangbusters, This is the FBI and Mr. District Attorney. That was my entertainment during the War Years until my parents bought a TV in 1950.

We were adopting my husband's great nephew. He'd been removed from his mother because she's a drug addict. We worked on it since he was 2, but since he is Canadian we had to do international adoption and it's a long drawn out, expensive process. We finally took custody when he was almost 6. He'd spent all that time in possession of the government. Unfortunately it didn't work out and we had to drop the adoption for 2 reasons. 1 was the Canadian courts decided foster care didn't have the authority to give permission for out of country adoption. That was a good thing because of the 2nd reason. He had frontal lobe brain damage from, most likely, her drug use. He was very violent and according to the professionals that evaluated him, he was most likely going to be a r@pist or at the very least in and out of prison for violent offenses. I'd asked them several times during the process if he had any mental or developmental delays we should be aware of. I'm disabled and was already caring for my wheelchair bound mother. I knew mentally and physically I couldn't deal with anymore. They assured me he was fine. Come to find out they'd known and had been warned by counselors about his violence since he was 3. I found out this is common in dealing with these government agencies. It's cases like ours that's makes people fearful of adopting. I hate seeing the act of adoption being linked to these outcomes with children. I know first hand that it's because of failures within these government agencies that these outcomes occur a long with the slow process. Had we been the 1st or 2nd family he was placed with, psychologists said he wouldn't have been as far gone as he was and we would have had a better chance of being able to successfully deal with his damage. Adopting when they are babies has much better outcomes than older children because of the damage caused by being moved from family to family. As for that woman adopted by a huwhite family, it sounds like she got made fun of and later came across identity politics which caused her to believe she'd been robbed of some fictitious racial identity.
